Today I have a collaboration post from me and Wendy Dressler. Enjoy!
Experts believe that there was over 1.2 trillion digital photos taken in 2017 alone. This huge number is nearly twice as many photos as the amount taken in 2013. The biggest reason for this huge increase in photos being taken is mobile phones. There are billions of mobile phones across the planet and most of them are capable of taking photos.
While more people are taking photos than ever before, there is a good chance that most of the photos aren’t the highest of quality. Most people either don’t know the best ways to take photos or aren’t using the correct equipment to get the best shots. With that in mind, this article is going to look at some easy camera tips and hacks to turn you into an expert.

Figure out Depth of Field
Depth of field is essentially what is in focus in an image, or the distance between objects in a photo that appear sharp. Some photos will only have a certain subject in focus with everything else being blurred. On the other hand, some will have everything in the photo appear in focus. If everything is in focus, you have a long depth of field and if not, the depth of field is shallow.
As you could imagine, figuring out and controlling DoF is an important thing to master in photography. Messing around with it and figuring out what should be in focus in your shot can help you get some truly unique shots. You can alter and change the depth of field by changing your distance, as well as things like using a wide aperture.
Use the Right Equipment
While all you need to take a photo is a digital camera or a phone, any professional photographer will tell you there is much more to the process. Camera peripheries and equipment is an incredibly large market with dozens of different products that range from a few dollars up to potentially thousands of dollars.
Many of these types of equipment such as lenses, backdrops, tripods and more can be found in a variety of different stores, or find them online. If you are just starting out with photography, there is no need to purchase them all right away. Instead, experience with your photos and see what you could pick up that could improve them. There are also many apps, programs and pieces of software that can improve your photos, as well.
Learn the Importance of Lighting
Of all the things that contribute to the success or failure of a photo, lighting is among the most important. Lighting not only dictates the brightness or darkness of a photo, but also the atmosphere or mood the photo conveys. As a result, different shots will call for different lighting. In order to get the right photo, you need to be comfortable playing around with different types of light.

In order to get the right photo, you need to be comfortable playing around with different types of light.
Of course, you have different types of light (studio light, natural light etc…), but the direction of the light is equally as important. Each type of light (and it’s direction) will influence how the photo looks. Without truly learning how important lighting is, and making sure you get it right, becoming a photo-taking expert may prove difficult.
Study the Work of Others
While you should never copy someone else’s photos exactly, looking to them for inspiration is perfectly fine. The internet is full of millions of different photos, and whatever your interests are, you’ll surely find photos relating to them. Pinterest, Instagram, or a simple Google search can provide you endless sources of inspiration.
You should look at the lighting, how the subjects are positioned, see if you can identify the equipment that is used and more. If you want to get better and be seen as an expert at something, taking time to learn and appreciate the art form you are trying to master is very important. And due to the internet, this has been made incredibly easy.
In conclusion, hopefully this article has helped you learn some great tips to improve your photography and camera skills.
